By the mid-1930s, French mathematics had languished for decades. World War I claimed a generation of promising students and researchers; universities taught mathematics using disjointed, outdated materials. Consequently, several young mathematicians united as Bourbaki. They began modestly: modernizing French curricula through cohesive textbooks. However, their aspirations rapidly expanded. Presently, Bourbaki (whose membership remains confidential) has generated over 40 volumes encompassing all mathematical domains.
